Randolph County
Senior Adults Association
Randolph County Senior Adults is proposing to build a state of the art Senior Adult Activities Center in Asheboro. The new facility, designed to be environmentally-friendly, will consist of over 30,000 square feet of heated space. The facility will include health and fitness activities that will allow older residents to improve their physical health and mental well-being through participation in structured activities that will enhance their lives. In addition, the facility will be located within walking distance from Carillon Assisted Living Center and Cross Roads Retirement Community and will be adjacent to the proposed Zoo City Soccer Park in Asheboro. Plans include the construction of walking paths and bike trails that will connect the RCSAA facility with the two assisted living facilities, the Soccer Park, Guy B. Teachey Elementary School, a proposed Greenway, the NC Zoo and other walking trails that will be developed for area residents.
Our accomplishments to date are:
- RCSAA recently made a down payment on 8.3 acres of property just outside the Asheboro City limits.
- Received a donation currently valued at $235,000 for the new senior center from the Anna Burton estate.
- Completed property survey (which was registered as an in-kind contribution).
- Sent out Request for Proposal for a Capital Campaign Coordinator.
- Completed Business Plan to determine operational costs of the new facility in the process of updating the facility budget.
- Designed a site and floor plan, for which public hearings and focus groups were held.
- Contracted with the Architect to revise the building and site plan for a green certified (LEEDS) building.
- Contracted with the Architect to complete the schematic design of the building.
- Contracted with a Consultant to conduct a feasibility study to determine the potential availability of local funding and community suport.
- Technical support is being provided by staff from the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments (PTCOG).
- Met with community groups and the PTCOG to coordinate the building and surrounding community projects into a single pilot project, connecting neighboring properties through a series of walking paths and bike trails.
- Held four public hearings in January 2009 to gather public input and answer questions.
- Received a commitment for letters of support for this project from over nine organizations including: City of Asheboro, the Randolph County Board of Commissioners, Cross Road Retirement Community, the NC Zoo, Randolph Community College, MERCE Clinic and the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce.
